Vintage orange striped textile from Nusa Penida
This vintage textile comes from Bali, Indonesia and has been hand dyed and hand woven using the ikat method. This is genuine ikat, not a print! Ikat is a labor intensive, extraordinarily beautiful weaving technique where each strand is individually dyed, then woven into stunning, vibrant patterns which can be recognized from island to island, village to village.
Textiles such as these are handwoven by the women, an ancient art typically passed down from mother to daughter. Part of the proceeds for the sale of this piece goes to support Threads of Life to keep this cultural art alive. http://www.threadsoflife.com/index.asp
This textile is quite soft and has probably been woven using naturally dyed, hand spun thread. In all my searching, I never saw another weaving like this one. The pattern is different and the softness was something I rarely felt with this type of weaving. The ikat is very well done as well, quite exact.
Measurements including tassels: 115cm x 53cm (45in x 21in)
The weaving does show some signs of it's age, however. There are 3 small holes (see photo), and some wear on one of the edges (I can send another photo if you'd like. They are small, and one hardly notices, but since this textile was most likely used for ceremonial dress, it has had lots of life experiences already! Now it's ready for it's next life experience in your home!
This textile would also be a beautiful rug, if you would like me to back it with denim, please send me a message.
Thank-you for visiting my shop!
