I remember this day so vividly! My mother and I were traveling around the beautiful island of Lombok, Indonesia. We had hired a guide and in addition to seeing the beautiful countryside of this island, we had asked him if he could show us places where we could see local women weaving, as well as look at their textiles.
It was perfect.
He brought us to a place where we could see the women sitting together spinning, hand dying and weaving thread together into amazing creations. Some of them had their beautiful babies wrapped to their chest while they worked. They would peak out from their safe little cocoons and watch this strange, blond hair blue eyed stranger. I loved having this glimpse into their normal, daily world. I was truly awe-struck by the time, energy and talent it took to make these incredible works of art.
I was hooked.
I picked up a particular piece I was attracted to, wrapped it around my waist and said, "This would make a beautiful skirt."...and there you have it, amyjodesigns was born in that moment! After that day, I spent many of my weekends while living on the island of Bali going to various markets in search of high quality, interesting and uniquely beautiful handwoven textiles. These buying trips were always an adventure, especially since I carried everything on my motorbike! With this blog I will share with you stories of these adventures as well as how these textiles inspire me to create new designs. Thank-you for reading!
